Many entrepreneurs find the thought of starting a blog overwhelming - and I totally get that. You already wear many hats and have a to-do list a mile long. But I'm here to tell you that investing time and/or resources in a blog is not as hard as it may seem - and will pay off in spades for your business.
Let's start with why it's a good idea. If done right, having a blog on your website will do a number of positive things for your business like:
If you decide to go it alone, don't be afraid to start small. Even one post a month is better than no posts a month. I often recommend posting twice monthly, or every two weeks, to start, with a longer-term goal of once/week. Whatever schedule you choose, commit to it - consistency is key.
Planning your content in advance will go a long way towards keeping you on track. Use the seasons, holidays, and other calendar events relevant to your industry as topic inspiration, or choose a monthly theme (again, let the time of year inform your choices, where it makes sense) and create content around that.
Posts don't have to be long or complicated to be effective, but they should be informative. Some of the most engaging posts offer quick tips, lists, and dos and don'ts. Include imagery whenever you can - either your own, or purchased from a stock photo site. There are some free stock photography options out there, but be wary of pulling images straight from Google as that could land you in copyright hot water.
Then, be ready to share your post on social media once you hit publish. Post on your Facebook page, Twitter (multiple times is fully acceptable on Twitter), and any other platforms that make sense for your business (Google+, LinkedIn, Pinterest, etc).
The bottom line: Create a realistic plan. Be consistent. And don't get overwhelmed :) It may take a few months but, over time, you can expect your efforts (or investment) to pay off in a big way for your small business.
